Our palette

January 9, 2011

We walked the land, today.

Chris with his drawing pad, me with my camera. It’s time to sketch out our plans for this acreage that has been sitting, untended, for over ten years. In the photo above you can see our firepit on the far right, which we’ve already enjoyed twice (including during the recent eclipse). Straight ahead, on the other side of the juniper and to the left of the “windmill” is the garden.

What will be the garden anyway.

Another view:

On the left, above, is the garden area, facing south. The view on the right, above, is looking north from the other side of the garden. In the background is our house.

The garden is about 23×26′, and our basic plan right now is to build the chicken coop inside, such that the garden can be divided in half giving the chickens one side to forage in one year, while we plant in the other side, then swapping sides the following year. We might end up needing more growing space, but I think this will be fine for 2011.

We planted about 75 square feet in 2009 using the square-foot gardening system, and are planning to try this again on a larger scale. With not as many squash. 🙂

I have been thinking a lot about how to deter rodents–we have mice like crazy, and I want them to feel as unwelcome as possible. We lost most of our corn crop to them in 09, and of course they get into the house at every opportunity. I’ve heard that mint is a great deterrent, so we plan to plant lots of it. Double benefit, since we adore fresh mint.

We also have old animal facilities–two corrals with shelter and a tack room (that the pack rat has recently taken over. That will be fun cleaning up!).

We need to do some work–there are plenty of leaks and a lot of mold in the ceiling, as you can kind of see in the pic. But goats have lived here before, and hopefully will again, soon. The stall on the left might also be a good place for Chris’s chickens (the ones the kids shouldn’t get attached to, if you know what I mean).

So much needs to be done. Nobody has tended this place since probably 1999.

But that’s our palette. What we have to work with. A lot of work, yes, but so many possibilities. 🙂
